Name: Holly Sutherland
Position: Hair Stylist

Currently working on: Juggling a career and being the best wife and mother I can be. I wouldn’t change a thing!
Loves: My first love is Jesus, who has been faithful to me on a personal level for many years. My family is my second great love, which includes my husband of fourteen years along with my three beautiful children. I enjoy spending time with my friends, I love coffee and shopping. My kids are active in sports and I love being a part of that. I enjoy sports myself and love watching football (Go Packers)! Candy is a weakness, so I have to watch it, but when I indulge, I love anything sour and then there’s chocolate! Sorry I gotta stop!
Mantra: “After trying so hard to conform to the standards and tastes of others, I began to see I am a one-of-a-kind work of art, unlike anyone else who has ever lived or ever will.” – Kathy Peel
Things that make me laugh: My Kids! And they are the best at getting my giggle box going! They leave special notes on my nightstand; rush into my arms as I walk through the door after a long day telling me the many funny things in their world. Laughter is good for the soul. Laugh even when you don’t feel like it!
Places you want to live: Dream place to live would be a big house on the beach. Wisconsin is where I was born and raised, but Louisville ahs been my home for the past 11 years. With the wonderful roots I have put down, I truly feel like Louisville is home.
Currently obsessed with: #1: For the moment, BIG earrings. Knowing that you can accessorize with great earrings, a necklace and a plain T-shirt, how easy is that! You gotta love it! #2: Cleaning my house, my husband and the kids, who love me so much for the obsession!
When did you know you wanted to do hair? I think I was born with this desire. I always styled hair in high school and at college. I helped friends with their weddings on the side and started getting calls to also do their hair. I knew I had a knack for hair styling and loved it. It has just been a matter of balancing a family and when to start a career for me. I have been involved in some aspect of the salon business for 14 years, which includes management, special events, and now behind the chair which is my favorite place to be.
How long have you been doing color? Two years.
How would you describe your approach to doing hair color? There are many approaches to hair color which includes what the client is looking for. Bold or simple, how will the client maintain the look, the client’s likes and dislikes ,tones and shades, and will the client be willing to make a change to something better if what they have is not working for them. The items I mentioned are by no means exhaustive, as color is really an individual thing with each person.
What inspires your creativity? I like to look at the client and get a feel for what style they really want and what they are going for. I try to listen to what the client is trying to express to me and make helpful suggestions. Maybe I can give the client ideas they have never considered. I can use a picture, talk about a personal hair style, show them ways to work their hair, suggest bangs, length, color, products, etc. I can give them confidence that what I can do in the chair, they can also do at home. Confidence is important. We all can use a little help to get where we are going. That is the job of the stylist.
What advice would you give to someone considering coloring their hair for the first time? There are several things to consider when coloring your hair. What is the reason for coloring, what products will the client use to make the color last, how will the color be maintained, and follow-up appointments of 5-7 weeks for touch up color. Make color fun, because it’s all about feeling good and adding a little something extra. Coloring your hiar is an investment in YOU! Looking and feeling good with the right their color can add that special edge.
How do you customize a hair color service for each and every client? Always start with a client consultation. Talk and listen so you are on the same page with the client. Use color swatches, pictures, take notes, ask questions, be patient and listen, listen, listen! Devote yourself to your client. Did I say listen!
What celebrity always has great hair & why? There are certainly many celebrities with great hair, but one person that comes to mind is Jennifer Lopez. Obviously Ms. Lopez has the means to purchase quality products, quality styling tools and personal staff to maintain her look. You cannot skimp on quality, it definitely shows. That is a good reminder to all of us, sometimes you pay for what you get, good or bad.
What’s your approach to retaining hair color clients? My belief is matching the right color with the natural hair and skin tones of the client. How you place your foils if you are highlighting or how you choose to help a client cover gray areas make for success. I personally give 110@ with every client and want them to feel they are special. I want each and every one of my clients to leave my chair 100% finished and feeling perfect. They are walking advertisements, and my reputation is on them.
Describe your personal style: I love to be “in the know” with the latest trends and styles in the hair industry. I change my color and hair style all the time. If I don’t change, how can I get my clients to change? Even though I am not in my 20’s any longer, I can still work a bang or go from dark to light. There is always a HAPPY medium with what can be done with a person’s face shape and color tone! You will never know until you try it.
How does your personal style influence your work? I come in ready to work every day. I am excited to see my clients and always have something NEW to give them. People want what they see in you and sometimes it may be your hair style, your hair color, makeup, your fashion accessories or a positive, kind word spoken to them at just the right time. It’s fun and exciting to make that happen for people.
